Cade Stover
Cade Stover Standing out in training camp
Thu, Jul 24, 2025, 4:42 PM
General manager Nick Caserio told reporters Thursday that Stover (collarbone) has stood out during the offseason and the early portions of training camp, Jared Koch of SI.com reports.
Analysis: Stover saw limited playing time during his rookie campaign, finishing with 15 catches (on 22 targets) for 133 yards and one touchdown across 15 regular-season games. He broke his collarbone during the Texans' wild-card win over the Chargers in January, but he has fully recovered from the injury and has made a good impression on Caserio and the coaching staff. Stover enters training camp in a competition against Brevin Jordan (knee) for backup tight end duties behind Dalton Schultz.
Braxton Berrios
Braxton Berrios Begins battle for roster spot
Wed, Jul 23, 2025, 8:08 PM
Berrios (knee) returned to practice Wednesday, Jonathan Alexander and Sam Warren of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Berrios made his practice debut Wednesday and played with the second and third-team quarterbacks. He reportedly had a good day, which he'll likely need to stack to make the roster. Berrios is also a good special teams contributor, which could be another path to him sticking with the team.
Brevin Jordan
Brevin Jordan Returns to practice
Wed, Jul 23, 2025, 7:59 PM
Jordan (knee) made his practice debut Wednesday, Jonathan Alexander and Sam Warren of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Jordan tore his ACL in Week 2 of the 2024 season and has been progressively ramping up. He returned to the practice field to catch a pass from C.J. Stroud during Wednesday's practice and appears to be tracking toward a Week 1 return.
Tank Dell
Tank Dell No timetable for return
Wed, Jul 23, 2025, 2:13 PM
GM Nick Caserio acknowledged Wednesday that there's no timetable for the return of Dell (knee), who is on the active/PUP list, Jonathan M. Alexander of The Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: While Caserio hasn't completely ruled out the possibility that Dell could return at some point this season, it's clear that the wideout -- who suffered a significant knee injury last December -- still has a way to go in his recovery process. With that in mind, Caserio noted that Dell is "in the building every day. He's working really hard, but we're not going to put a timetable on anything," a notion echoed by coach DeMeco Ryans, who added that the 2023 third-rounder is "crushing the rehab." With Dell likely to miss a good portion of the coming season, the Texans' top healthy veteran wide receivers are Nico Collins and Christian Kirk, with 2025 draftees Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel also in the mix to carve out steady roles in the team's passing attack.
J.J. Taylor
J.J. Taylor Not ready for training camp
Wed, Jul 23, 2025, 11:18 AM
Taylor (undisclosed) was placed on the active/PUP list Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Taylor was essentially a rotational practice-squad back for Houston last year, playing in five contests and totaling 33 offensive snaps. It's unclear what injury Taylor may be dealing with, but the Texans may just be being cautious with their veterans as the team placed 13 players on either the non-football injury list or PUP list before the start of training camp. The 27-year-old can return to the practice field at any point in the offseason, should the team deem him ready, and he will likely need to quickly as Taylor could be competing for a roster spot with newly drafted fourth-round pick, Woody Marks.
Dameon Pierce
Dameon Pierce Starts camp on PUP list
Wed, Jul 23, 2025, 9:04 AM
The Texans are placing Pierce (undisclosed) on the active/PUP list for the start of training camp, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: There was no hint of injury trouble during the offseason and no report yet about what might be bothering Pierce. He's in the final year of his rookie contract and is set to compete with Nick Chubb and Woody Marks for backup roles behind Joe Mixon (ankle), who is opening camp on the NFI list.
Tank Dell
Tank Dell Placed on PUP list
Wed, Jul 23, 2025, 9:00 AM
The Texans placed Dell (knee) on the active/PUP list for the start of training camp, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Dell is unlikely to participate this summer, as he is coming back from MCL, LCL and ACL tears suffered Week 16 of last season. He'll likely miss a good chunk of the upcoming regular season, if not all of it. Dell had multiple surgeries this offseason, with the first in mid-January and the most recent in early March.
Joe Mixon
Joe Mixon Placed on NFI list
Wed, Jul 23, 2025, 8:57 AM
The Texans placed Mixon (ankle) on the active/non-football injury list for the start of training camp, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Mixon suffered multiple ankle injuries last season, including one that cost him Weeks 3-5, but the current issue is from something that happened during his individual offseason training -- thus the non-football injury designation. He missed spring practices, with reports at the time suggesting he'd likely be ready for training camp. Recent updates imply the Texans still aren't overly concerned and plan to ease Mixon into training camp, with his absence in the meantime potentially freeing up first-team reps for Nick Chubb, Dameon Pierce, Woody Marks and Dare Ogunbowale.
Brevin Jordan
Brevin Jordan Progressing in ACL recovery
Tue, Jul 22, 2025, 12:54 PM
Jordan (knee) is running at "high speeds" but is expected to be eased back in at training camp, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Jordan suffered a torn ACL in Week 2 last season and missed the remainder of the year. Now 10 months out from the injury, Jordan should be close to 100 percent health by the time Week 1 rolls around. Jordan figures to be in line to handle TE2 duties in Houston behind Dalton Schultz.
Joe Mixon
Joe Mixon Limited reps early in camp
Tue, Jul 22, 2025, 12:39 PM
Mixon, who is progressing well in his recovery from an ankle injury, is likely to be eased back into the mix in training camp, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Mixon sported a walking boot this spring after getting hurt during individual offseason training, but since then the running back has regained his mobility while ramping up his workouts. Though he could be limited to a degree early on in training camp, when 100 percent healthy he's in line to maintain his status as the top option in a Houston backfield that added Nick Chubb this offseason and returns Dameon Pierce.
C.J. Stroud
C.J. Stroud Transforms body
Thu, Jul 17, 2025, 6:24 PM
Stroud made it a point during the offseason to rework his body after a sophomore season of regression in 2024, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports. "I've been working really hard on getting my body right -- losing body fat, trying to be faster, stronger," Stroud said. "And it went really well. ... [Working] pocket mobility, running out the pocket, throwing the rock. Everything kind of works hand in hand."
Analysis: Stroud looks to rebound from his second NFL season, when he saw dips in passing yards and touchdowns while throwing seven more interceptions than in his rookie season. It's a hopeful sign that Stroud is putting in the work this offseason, but there are other areas of the offense that needs to improve in 2025. Houston ranked 22nd in yards per game (319.7) and 19th in points per game (21.9) while managing to win the AFC South for a second consecutive season. That drop cost offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik his job, as the Texans replaced him with Nick Caley, who was the pass game coordinator and tight ends coach for the Rams last year. In addition to what will be a new playbook, the offensive line needs to be better. Stroud was sacked 52 times during the regular season and taken down 11 more times during the playoffs.
Joe Mixon
Joe Mixon On track for training camp
Wed, Jul 9, 2025, 12:12 PM
Mixon, who has been dealing with what Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston describes as foot-ankle issues, is expected to be ready for training camp, which opens July 23.
Analysis: Wilson noted that there's not cause for concern in terms of the training camp/regular season status of the Texans' top running back, who missed time this offseason, but has made strides since then. Once Mixon returns to the practice field, he'll reclaim his role atop a backfield depth chart that also includes Nick Chubb, who the team signed to a one-year contract last month, as well as Dameon Pierce, 2025 fourth-rounder Woody Marks and Dare Ogunbowale. In 14 regular-season games with Houston in 2024, Mixon carried 245 times for 1,016 yards and 11 TDs to go along with a 36/309/1 receiving line. Looking ahead, the 28-year-old appears poised to maintain steady usage in 2025, with the presence of Chubb -- health permitting -- providing Mixon with a viable veteran complement to spell his workload.
C.J. Stroud
C.J. Stroud Throwing at mandatory minicamp
Tue, Jun 10, 2025, 10:36 AM
Stroud (shoulder) is throwing at the start of mandatory minicamp Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Stroud is on the field for the start of 7-on-7 drills with the first-team offense, per Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle, and a video recorded by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston shows the third-year quarterback participating in padded throwing drills without any apparent discomfort. Coach DeMeco Ryans consistently downplayed Stroud's right shoulder soreness during voluntary OTAs, saying he had "no concerns," and the 2023 first-round pick is indeed now ready to resume building chemistry with a new wide receiver corps that adds veteran Christian Kirk and rookies Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel behind No. 1 option Nico Collins.
Nick Chubb
Nick Chubb Inks one-year deal with Texans
Mon, Jun 9, 2025, 5:23 PM
Chubb and the Texans officially agreed to a one-year contract Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Chubb's 2023 campaign was cut short by ACL, MCL and meniscus tears in his left knee, and upon his return Week 7 of last season, he topped out at 59 rushing yards among his eight appearances before suffering a fracture in his left foot Week 15, ending the year on injured reserve. Prior to those injuries, he had put together four straight 1,000-yard seasons on the ground for the Browns, but with Joe Mixon (lower body) entrenched as Houston's top running back for 2025, Chubb likely will be relegated to a complementary role while potentially competing for reps with Dameon Pierce and rookie fourth-rounder Woody Marks, considering Chubb's deal has a base salary of $2.5 million.
Nick Chubb
Nick Chubb Expected to join Houston
Sun, Jun 8, 2025, 5:31 PM
The Texans plan to sign Chubb on Monday pending a successful physical, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Chubb suffered a season-ending foot fracture in mid-December, and he became a free agent after his contract with the Browns officially expired in March. The 29-year-old did not undergo surgery this offseason, so Monday's physical will provide some important clarity as the Texans look to bolster their rushing game. Chubb also missed the first six games last season while recovering from a torn left ACL suffered in September of 2023. The four-time Pro Bowler's production plummeted last season with the least efficient campaign of his career, logging 102 carries for 332 yards and three touchdowns. He's now set to join a running back room headlined by another notable veteran in Joe Mixon, who tallied 245 carries for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns during his first season in Houston last year. The Texans have last year's No. 2 running back, Dameon Pierce, along with rookie fourth-rounder Woody Marks, still on the roster as well. Given the wear and tear Chubb has sustained over the last couple of years, and pending a successful physical, he'll likely vie with Pierce for a role as the primary backup behind Mixon this coming season.
C.J. Stroud
C.J. Stroud Managing sore throwing shoulder
Tue, Jun 3, 2025, 11:36 AM
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said Tuesday that Stroud is dealing with "general soreness" related to his right throwing shoulder, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Stroud was kept from throwing early at voluntary OTAs due to what was initially called a minor pectoral injury, but Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston now reports the third-year quarterback is dealing with muscle tightness in his throwing shoulder. Still, Ryans repeated that there are "no concerns" with Stroud, per Jeremy Bergman of NFL.com, and that the team is "taking extra precaution with him, but he'll be good to go." Stroud still has ample time, roughly a month and a half, to get fully healthy for the start of training camp. The most notable consequence of his current absence from practice is missing early opportunities to build chemistry with new wideouts Christian Kirk, Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel, but the majority of such reps will be taken during training camp and the preseason. At that stage, Stroud will also face the challenge of adapting to a new-look offensive line that may take a step backwards, even after struggling in 2024, due to the trade of Laremy Tunsil to Washington.
Dalton Schultz
Dalton Schultz Back on practice field
Tue, Jun 3, 2025, 11:13 AM
Schultz (leg) is on the practice field Tuesday for voluntary OTAs, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Schultz missed a handful of days early at OTAs due to an apparent leg injury, but he already appears over the minor issue. Now heading into his age-29 season and third year catching passes from C.J. Stroud (pectoral), Schultz is competing for targets in a pass-catching corps led by Nico Collins that remains crowded despite the departure of Stefon Diggs (ACL) for New England, and Tank Dell (ACL) being a candidate to miss significant time. Houston acquired veteran slot receiver Christian Kirk via a trade with Jacksonville early in the offseason, then added early-round wideouts in the second (Jayden Higgins) and third (Jaylin Noel) rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft. Schultz remains entrenched over Brevin Jordan (ACL) and Cade Stover (collarbone) as the Texans' top tight end, but his ceiling seems to be as either the third or fourth option in Houston's passing game.
C.J. Stroud
C.J. Stroud Managing minor pectoral issue
Fri, May 30, 2025, 6:39 PM
Stroud isn't currently throwing during voluntary team activities due to a tight pectoral, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Stroud watched from the sideline Friday during practice while backup quarterback Davis Mills ran the offense. Per Wilson, Stroud's injury isn't considered a long-term problem, and the star QB could increase his activity as soon as next week. Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley downplayed the issue Friday, saying that there are "no concerns whatsoever" about Stroud, echoing what coach DeMeco Ryans stated earlier in the week.
Joe Mixon
Joe Mixon Missing OTAs with minor injury
Fri, May 30, 2025, 11:18 AM
Mixon (lower body) is not participating in voluntary team activities Friday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Mixon has sported a walking boot recently due to an injury Wilson's sources describe as minor, though head coach DeMeco Ryans has yet to comment on the starting running back's status. All expectations remain that Mixon will be a full-go for the start of training camp in late July, if not mandatory minicamp in June. Mixon's inaugural season with Houston saw him dominate backfield reps, compiling 245 carries for 1,016 yards (4.1 YPC) and eight scores across 14 regular-season appearances, while adding 36 grabs for 309 yards (on 52 targets) and another score. While Mixon faded in terms of efficiency down the stretch of the regular season, he managed a surge during the Texans' two playoff contests, combining for 43 carries for 194 yards and two scores. Mixon remains secure in a workhorse role entering his age-29 season, with Dameon Pierce and Woody Marks compete for No. 2 reps.
Christian Kirk
Christian Kirk Taking part in practice
Wed, May 28, 2025, 1:46 PM
Kirk (collarbone) is participating in on-field positional drills at OTAs on Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Kirk no longer looks hindered by the broken collarbone that ended his 2024 season in Jacksonville after just eight games. The Texans traded for Kirk early March then selected two rookies out of Iowa State in the early rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft, in the form of Jayden Higgins (second round) and Jaylin Noel (third round). Even with Tank Dell (knee) nursing a serious enough injury that he could miss most, or all, of the upcoming season, Higgins and Noel represent notable competition for targets behind No. 1 wideout Nico Collins. At 6-foot-4, 212 pounds with 4.47 speed, Higgins is a physical clone of Collins capable of joining him on the boundary, while Noel's smaller frame and 4.39 speed seemingly positions him to begin as a deep threat. That leaves Kirk with a clear path to dominate slot reps, with the catch being that Noel could eventually compete for such snaps, and Houston's other wideouts could emerge as higher-priority targets for C.J. Stroud.
